If internet users\u2019 backlash is anything to go by, they got that last part right. \u201cIt\u2019s a crying shame\u201d, \u201cTerrible\u201d, \u201cUnreadable\u201d, \u201cHellish\u201d, \u201cA disaster\u201d are just some of the comments on the App Store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse yet, users have rushed to <strong>competitors\u2019 applications<\/strong>! The story made it across the French news media, some of whom went as far as to call it an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blocnotes.iergo.fr\/articles\/sncf-connect-petit-bilan-dune-catastrophe-industrielle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industrial disaster<\/a>&#8220;. SNCF itself had to make an official <a href=\"https:\/\/vous.sncf-connect.com\/article\/actus\/sncf-connect-on-se-dit-tout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;to account for its actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is natural for users to resist change, and the app has received some positive reviews after a time of adjustment. However, specialists do say that SNCF Connect has a key design flaw:<strong>&nbsp;it does not meet users\u2019 needs <\/strong>\u2013 namely, being able to book a train ticket easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what <strong>UX&nbsp;design<\/strong>&nbsp;is for: making sure that an application meets users\u2019 needs intuitively and smoothly, with as little friction as possible. More baffling still, this comes four years after <a href=\"https:\/\/uxplanet.org\/weird-ux-design-fails-in-2018-that-we-will-never-understand-d6ac44f87bab\">Linh Dao<\/a> expressed her dismay at how UX design fails still existed\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s take a dive into <strong>BlueMind\u2019s UX-based development process <\/strong>and how we put users\u2019 needs at the heart of our entire approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#0693e3\" class=\"tadv-color\">Key UX development points at BlueMind<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A small caveat first: the blog article format constrains us to outlining BlueMind\u2019s UX development process as a linear series of steps while in fact, it\u2019s an iterative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em><span style=\"color:#0693e3\" class=\"tadv-color\">Understanding users and their needs<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Who are our users?<\/li><li>What are their habits?<\/li><li>What are their needs (habits don\u2019t always reflect actual underlying needs but cannot be ignored altogether)?<\/li><li>What are their expectations?<\/li><li>What are their constraints?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer these questions, we rely on several sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, <strong>we are users of our own solution<\/strong>. Beta versions featuring the latest developments are first rolled out in-house and tested live by our teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, we analyse <strong>current users\u2019 feedback<\/strong>. Our support and sales teams are in constant contact with our clients and we use a series of reporting processes such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.bluemind.net\/suggestions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suggestion Box<\/a>. The Suggestion Box is solely dedicated to feature and enhancements requests to avoid queries or feature requests polluting the bug tracker which must stay on its own focus, i.e. bug reporting and follow-up. The Suggestion Box also forces users to perform a qualified search before entering a new feature. This avoids duplicates and helps us assess weight\/priority level based on the number of requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the <strong>trade shows<\/strong> our sales teams regularly attend and our marketing department\u2019s <strong>competitive intelligence<\/strong> tracking also provide essential insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all, this means that <strong>all company departments<\/strong> come into action around new projects through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideou.com\/blogs\/inspiration\/what-is-design-thinking\">design thinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Writing out use cases<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Email being such a commonly used and widespread tool, its typical features are well known. What we therefore try to do is dissect <strong>each feature in fine detail<\/strong> to improve\/streamline how it is used and come up with new use cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We write out scenarios to help us understand <strong>how the application is \u2013 or will be \u2013 used<\/strong>. For instance, in the previous step we identified users\u2019 need to preview message attachments. This means offering a <strong>truly sovereign and virtuous alternative<\/strong> to foreign providers of email \u2013 the number one business tool. This meta-objective has multiple offshoots such as \u201cengaging users\u201d, \u201ccommitting to our ecosystem\u201d, \u201cbeing transparent\u201d, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roadmap stage involves documenting both <strong>high-priority features and less essential<\/strong> ones in terms of product philosophy, as well as, obviously, technical constraints.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roadmap therefore not only helps <strong>set priorities but also anticipate future evolutions and deliver a coherent set of features<\/strong>. It is not, however, a legally binding document. By definition, a software publisher\u2019s roadmap is ever-changing and non-biding. We have a good idea of what our macro, confirmed or nearly completed projects are, but the whole thing is subject to the hazards of the trade: R&amp;D is full of uncertainties, clients are many and varied, and priorities and risks come and go as projects progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Mock-Up<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> UI<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 User Interface \u2013 is the visible part of UX. It is what people see, i.e. anything to do with <strong>graphics, display and layout<\/strong>. So, beyond what an application looks like, UI also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/fr\/accessibilite-concevoir-un-webmail-pour-tous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>accessibility<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 its ability to be used by anyone regardless of their equipment, software, language or even disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mock-up stage is therefore the stage when <strong>UX meets UI<\/strong> as use cases come to life through the user interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our prototypes we use a graphical editing and interface design solution \u2013 <strong>Figma<\/strong>. This application lets us carry out all kinds of graphical design projects, from websites to mobile application interfaces to model prototyping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is an overview of a Figma workflow hover, keyboard only, disabled, small or large, a warning display or an action confirmation, etc.).<\/li><li><strong>Play out interactions<\/strong>&nbsp;(what happens when I click somewhere, animations, etc.).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of mock-ups generated is huge \u2013&nbsp;<strong>over 2,000<\/strong>&nbsp;for our webmail \u2013 and in particular for some features and href=\"https:\/\/www.deque.com\/axe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Axe<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wave.webaim.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wave<\/a>&nbsp;to assess&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/fr\/accessibilite-concevoir-un-webmail-pour-tous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accessibility<\/a>, i.e. compliance with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.numerique.gouv.fr\/publications\/rgaa-accessibilite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong> standards<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>for disabled people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Consistent features, ergonomics and graphics<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The mock-up stage also helps to make sure that new developments are <strong>consistent with existing<\/strong> ones (old mail system) and <strong>competitors\u2019 products<\/strong> (Outlook, OWA, and Gmail \u2013 to a lesser extent as it is not enterprise-focused and has a different target market).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also make sure that access to features is consistent across all <strong>screens<\/strong> and application <strong>contexts<\/strong> (through reusable components, Lego brick-like).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, everything must be consistent with the <strong>graphic charter<\/strong> (visual identity, colour consistency, fonts, icons, weight, sizes, shapes, spacing and animations) so that it all blends into <strong>BlueMind\u2019s They give rise to idiosyncratic uses, specific behaviours, and different habits and constraints.
