This study covers usage analysis and the role of\nfreeware in businesses \u2013 in particular in innovation \u2013 based on interviews with\n117 organisations in France in the fourth quarter of 2019. It is completed by a\ncomparison of the situation in France with several European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Digital transformation is boosting the open-source market:<\/strong>&nbsp;the freeware sector in France\n<strong>is expected to keep growing significantly \u2013 9% per year \u2013 until<\/strong> <strong>2023<\/strong>,\nwhich is above the average for the IT market as a whole \u2013 around 4% in 2019-2020.\nIn almost 80% of companies, the use of open source will grow in the next two\nyears.&nbsp;<strong>France \u2013 closely followed by Germany and the UK \u2013 is keeping its\nposition as Europe\u2019s biggest market.<\/strong>&nbsp;It is also the market where the share\nof open source remains higher as a percentage of the overall IT market \u2013 over 10%\n(v. 7% in Germany and 7.4% in the UK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/blog.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/blog.jpg 800w, https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/blog-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/blog-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/blog-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Presentation of the study at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensourcesummit.paris\/\">Paris Open Source Summit<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Open source, a strategic\ncomponent in organisations\u2019 change:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A <strong>key role in digital transformation strategies and the implementation of innovative technologies<\/strong>. For 9 companies out of 10, freeware is important or preferred when used for <strong>AI, data management and blockchain.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Company managers and departments are <strong>increasingly committed to open source<\/strong>. They sponsor the use of open source in one in three companies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Freeware meets the need for <strong>customisation and technological independence<\/strong>. These are the two primary reasons for companies to adopt open source technologies, followed by cost reduction, improved information systems and software reliability, and better interoperability.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Open source is seen as an asset for the European digital industry<\/strong>. About 8 companies out of 10 believe that the Old Continent is leading the way in the field of open source and its adoption.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe growth of open source isn\u2019t waning and remains high \u2013 at almost 9% per\nyear \u2013 which is significant for a market now worth \u20ac5bn in France and over\n\u20ac26bn in Europe, <\/em>applauds <strong>Marc Palazon<\/strong>, chairman of <strong>Syntec Num\u00e9rique<\/strong>\u2019s\nopen-source committee<em>.
