But how can we achieve this effectively? And what for?<\/p>\n<h2>UX, just frills?<\/h2>\n<p>UX &#8212; short for User eXperience\u00a0\u2013 refers to users\u2019 overall experience when interacting with a product or service. It encompasses the product\u2019s <strong>visual<\/strong> aspect (design), <strong>usability <\/strong>(features and effectiveness), and <strong>overall feel<\/strong> (is the software easy \u2013 or even pleasurable \u2013 to use?).<\/p>\n<p>Unlike this, for instance!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gph.is\/2kqL1BS\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/eWW9O2a4IdpWU\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Apartment Result GIF - Find &amp; Share on GIPHY\" width=\"720\" height=\"828\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Design refers to the UI\u2019s \u201cprettiness\u201d. It portrays BlueMind\u2019s identity and must be consistent throughout the software suite.<\/p>\n<p>Today, email is a key tool, both for businesses and individuals, whether they\u2019re using a thick client such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/en\/why-is-being-100-outlook-compatible-so-revolutionary\/\">Outlook<\/a> or Thunderbird\u00a0or a web client. It\u2019s reflects the user\u2019s satisfaction with the interface.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gph.is\/g\/4VV2eY4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/2tSodgDfwCjIMCBY8h\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Instagram GIF by Fran Solo - Find &amp; Share on GIPHY\" width=\"480\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>UX\u00a0strategy implementation \u2013 Getting the players involved: a technical and human challenge<\/h2>\n<p>In a typical organisation, design, features and product feel are often compartmentalised into silos. In an agile environment, Product Owners collect user requirements and define the feature to implement, and developers select and develop the best technically-suited solution. The feature is then rolled out to all users.<\/p>\n<p>Without a UX strategy, the issue with this workflow is that it will result in a technical and feature-oriented product: i.e. it has all the features needed, it works well, but using it can be tedious.<\/p>\n<p>The UX manager\u2019s role is to instil UX principles at all decision levels (design, features and development) and set quality standards that will help achieve a smooth user experience.<\/p>\n<h3>BlueMind\u2019s UX Strategy<\/h3>\n<p>At BlueMind, we\u2019ve built our UX strategy on two key pillars. First, we\u2019ve created set of guidelines for good practices and graphical components open both internally and externally: <a href=\"https:\/\/forge.bluemind.net\/staging\/styleguide\/abm-styleguide.html?path=\/story\/ui-overview--overview\">the style guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This style guide is designed to help all BlueMind players.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1215\" src=\"https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/styleguide-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1404\" height=\"975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/styleguide-1.png 1404w, https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/styleguide-1-150x104.png 150w, https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/styleguide-1-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/styleguide-1-768x533.png 768w, https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/styleguide-1-1024x711.png 1024w, https:\/\/bluemind.purpl-web.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/styleguide-1-1140x792.png 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1404px) 100vw, 1404px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Product Owners<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> rely on a set of specific style guide rules when writing new specifications. E.g. the rule about minimising the number of clicks forces them to think about efficient features and avoid cumbersome processes such as successive windows.<\/span><br \/><br \/>The <strong>Marketing<\/strong> department defines the BlueMind\u00a0identity: colours, icons, fonts and the overall tone of the application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Developers<\/strong> can pick straight into the code when they need a new feature. The guidelines help make the process responsive: when a component in the style guide is modified, it will be modified across all BlueMind UIs, thereby ensuring overall consistency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Designers<\/strong> have a list of the solution\u2019s existing graphical components and produce designs that help enrich the style guide.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>QA<\/strong> department can refer to the style guide when testing new features or to make sure that UX rules have been met.<\/p>\n<p>Second, we put UX at the heart of the agile process by adding new UX specifications when creating new <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thiga.fr\/glossaire\/definition-user-story\/\">User Stories<\/a> (feature specification). When a new US needs to be specified, the PO talks to the designer, the developers and the UX manager about the feature. The designer creates one or several mock-ups using Figma, a collaborative tool (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.figma.com\">www.figma.com<\/a>). Just like specifications, the mock-up can evolve during the development phase, as needs or issues arise. Modifications must be approved by all US\u00a0players: PO, designer, developers and UX manager.
